LIVER TRANSPLANT COST IN INDIA
Liver transplant cost in India
A liver transplant is a major operation for both patient and donor, and every case is different. We get you a free written estimate from experienced transplant hospitals and guide you through the donor rules before you travel.
Medical recommendations come from your qualified treating clinicians.
Why liver transplant costs differ
The estimate covers two people, the patient and the living donor. The main factors are:
- Your diagnosis and how unwell you are before surgery
- Evaluation tests for you and your donor
- Whether the blood groups match
- Days in intensive care and in hospital
- Complications, infections or further procedures
- Hospital, surgeon and room category

What a transplant estimate usually covers
Ask each hospital exactly what’s included. A typical estimate may cover evaluation of the patient and donor, both surgeries, the ICU and hospital stay, and medicines during the stay. These are often extra:
- A longer ICU or hospital stay
- Treatment of complications
- Blood products beyond the package
- Medicines and follow-up tests after discharge
Donor rules for international patients
Most international patients have a living donor liver transplant, where a healthy relative donates part of their liver. India regulates this under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. The donor must normally be a close relative, your embassy or government must provide the required documents, and the hospital’s authorisation committee must approve the transplant. Buying or selling organs is illegal, and Orvica never assists with any paid organ donation.
How long to plan for in India
Donor evaluation usually takes about a week. After surgery, the patient typically stays in hospital for three to four weeks, including several days in intensive care. The donor usually leaves hospital within about ten days. Most patients are advised to stay near the hospital for follow-up checks before flying home, so plan for around two to three months in India. Your hospital confirms the timeline for your case.
Choosing a hospital and specialist
Compare hospitals on the specialist’s experience with your treatment, the written estimate and what it includes, and how follow-up will work once you are home.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a liver transplant cost in India?⌄
It depends on your condition, your donor’s evaluation, the hospital and how long you need intensive care, so we don’t quote a fixed price. Share your details and we’ll get you a free written estimate.
Do you treat liver cirrhosis before a transplant?⌄
Yes. Hepatologists assess and treat cirrhosis and decide whether and when a transplant is needed.
Who can donate part of their liver to me?⌄
For foreign patients, the donor is normally a close relative, such as a spouse, parent, sibling or adult child. The donor must be healthy and pass the hospital’s evaluation, and the authorisation committee must approve the transplant.
Is it safe for my donor?⌄
Living liver donation is major surgery, and the hospital’s team will explain the risks to your donor in detail. The donated part of the liver grows back over the following months.
How long will we stay in India?⌄
Plan for around two to three months for the patient, and less for the donor. The hospital confirms this after evaluating you both.
What happens after I return home?⌄
You’ll take medicines for life and need regular blood tests. Your coordinator keeps you connected with your transplant team in India for reports and follow-up.
