01

Why bone marrow transplant costs differ

A bone marrow (stem cell) transplant is planned around your diagnosis and donor. The main factors are:

  • Autologous transplant, using your own stem cells, or allogeneic, using a donor’s
  • A fully matched sibling, a half-matched (haploidentical) family member or an unrelated donor
  • Your diagnosis, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or thalassaemia
  • Days in the transplant unit
  • Infections, graft-versus-host disease or other complications
  • Hospital and room category

What a transplant estimate usually covers

Ask each hospital exactly what’s included. An estimate may cover pre-transplant tests, donor tests and stem cell collection, the transplant, the stay in the transplant unit, and medicines and blood products during the stay. These are often extra:

  • A longer stay than the package assumes
  • Treatment of infections or graft-versus-host disease
  • Blood products beyond the package
  • Medicines and follow-up tests after discharge
03

Finding a donor

For an allogeneic transplant, a brother or sister is tested first because they are most likely to be a full match. If no sibling matches, many hospitals offer a half-matched transplant from a parent, child or sibling. Bring your family members’ HLA test results if you have them, or the hospital will arrange testing.

04

How long to plan for in India

The hospital stay is often around four to five weeks, a little shorter for an autologous transplant. After discharge, you’ll need frequent check-ups near the hospital, so plan for around two to three months in India for an allogeneic transplant, and less for an autologous one. Your hospital confirms the timeline for your case.

05

Choosing a hospital and specialist

Compare hospitals on the specialist’s experience with your treatment, the written estimate and what it includes, and how follow-up will work once you are home.
