BYPASS SURGERY (CABG) COST IN INDIA

Bypass surgery (CABG) cost in India

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is one of the most common reasons patients travel to India for heart surgery. There is no fixed price, so we get you written estimates from experienced cardiac teams after they review your angiogram.

Medical recommendations come from your qualified treating clinicians.

01

What is bypass surgery?

In CABG, the surgeon uses a blood vessel from your chest, arm or leg to route blood around blocked coronary arteries. It is usually recommended when several arteries are narrowed, the main left artery is blocked, or angioplasty is not suitable.

Many Indian cardiac surgeons perform beating-heart (off-pump) bypass and use arterial grafts where possible. Your surgeon recommends the approach after reviewing your angiogram and echocardiogram.

Why CABG costs differ

Two patients having bypass surgery can receive quite different estimates. The main factors are:

  • The number of grafts and whether arterial grafts are used
  • On-pump or beating-heart (off-pump) surgery
  • Heart pumping function and any valve problem needing repair at the same time
  • Diabetes, kidney disease or lung problems
  • Days in the cardiac intensive care unit
  • Hospital, surgeon and room category
03

What a bypass surgery estimate usually covers

Ask each hospital exactly what is included. A typical package covers pre-operative tests, the operation, surgeon and anaesthesia fees, intensive care, a set number of ward days and standard medicines. These are often extra:

  • An angiogram if it has to be repeated in India
  • Extra days in intensive care or hospital
  • Treatment of complications
  • Medicines after discharge
04

How long to plan for in India

Most patients spend about five to seven days in hospital and two to three weeks in India in total before the surgeon clears them to fly. Bring a companion; up to two family members can travel on e-Medical Attendant Visas.

05

Choosing a heart hospital and surgeon

Ask how many bypass operations the team performs each year, whether beating-heart surgery suits you, and who will look after you in intensive care.
